Humor in "The Last of Us"
The new show “The Last of Us” has received much critical attention, and rightly so. For a series based on a video game, a video game with a devoted fan base, the writing, production, and acting have been outstanding. One aspect of the show that has received some attention here and here, but not nearly enough is humor. Humor in “The Last of Us” is not simply something thrown in simply to get a laugh. In the episodes humor does so much more. It’s an important tool the show relies on to advance the story arc and evolve the characters. Undoubtedly humor provides respite for audience and character alike. But humor provides more than just a break. The reason this is important is because the above referenced articles make the humor seem like a simple add on. It’s not. The humor, however infrequent is a critical piece of the growth of the characters and the overall story arc.
