Hello Substack Folks,
In the world of organization, I pretty much failed on getting out of the gate on this new platform. I think the suggestion was to make sure you’re posting once a week for the first year or so. Or maybe that was YouTube, or Instagram, or TikTok. I can’t keep it all straight in my head. There’s a lot about self-promotion that I don’t like, but it’s part of the landscape of getting stuff out there, so here’s my next step towards total self promotion!!! Buy my book, “The Humor Hack.” It’s Christmas after all.
Enough of that, let’s attempt to do a little humor work, or humorous work in this post.
One of the things that I love about humor and working with funny things is the low bar for entry. We all know what we find funny, and we all say funny things now and again. The main thing, or perhaps the main piece of advice that I would give if you want to be more intentional about humor and such is to pay attention to when you find something funny, or when you say or do something funny. We’ve all got little notebooks in our pockets so put those cell phones to a use other than doom-scrolling, memes, and social media. But then I repeat myself there right?
You’ll start to find pretty quickly that you have a particular way you do funny. You have a style. It may be only minimally a style, but there’s plenty enough there for you to work with, to develop, and move on from. Once you get a sense of your sense of humor, once you’ve gotten a few things noted, stored, and explored, you can start to prepare and be ready with a good joke, quip, or funny mention. You’ll also see how much more of your type of funny is out there. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you notice and how much more funny is out there. So I encourage you to get out there and explore the humor in your world. At the very least you’ll be having more fun.
Ok, so now I have to return to the wonderful world of promotion. The minimum “subscriber” rate for stacks that the website suggests is $5/month. There’s also the founder level, yearly levels (which include a price break—get two months free!) and all the rest. I assume, like with Kickstarters and the like, there’s some sort of perks for people who subscribe. Not sure I have the wherewithal to produce free and member level content. But I am sure if I make enough money I will find time. ;-). So be on the lookout for announcements of that sort where I ask for the money. But for now, laugh often and much and enjoy the humor that’s in your world.
Instead of $5 a month, I would like to pledge a beer.
